Intro
Every video production company shows you a beautiful showreel. That is the problem: a showreel is thirty seconds of everyone’s best work, and it tells you almost nothing about what working with them is like, or what your film will look like. After a decade of inheriting projects that went wrong elsewhere, here are the questions that actually separate good production partners from expensive disappointments.
Ask Who Will Actually Be On Your Shoot
The single most revealing question. Plenty of agencies sell you the senior team in the pitch and send juniors on the day. Ask directly: who will be at my filming day, and who does the edit? If the answer is vague, so is the quality you will get. You should know the names of the people making your film before you sign anything.
Look for Planning in the Quote
A quote that jumps straight to day rates and kit lists has skipped the part that determines whether the film works: the thinking. Good production partners ask what the film needs to achieve, who it is for, and where it will live, before they talk cameras. If there is no planning or pre-production in the quote, the strategy is happening on the day, at your expense.
Judge Full Films, Not Montages
Ask to see two or three complete films for clients like you, not the showreel. A full film reveals pacing, storytelling and how they handle real-world constraints: the awkward interviewee, the noisy venue, the brand guidelines. Anyone can make three seconds look good in a montage. The craft is in the whole.
Expect Transparent Pricing
Very few production companies publish their prices. We think that is a tell. If a company cannot give you a straight answer about what things typically cost, budget conversations after signing tend to go one way. As a benchmark: brand films typically run £3,500 to £7,000, single-day event coverage £5,000 to £8,000. Our full cost guide publishes the lot.
Confirm Who Owns the Files
Ask what happens to the footage and final films after delivery. You want the finished films outright, and clarity about accessing the raw footage later. Some companies quietly retain everything and charge for re-edits forever. Get ownership in writing before the shoot, not after.
Choose Fit Over Size
A big agency brings process; a freelancer brings a camera. The middle is where most organisations get the best value: senior people who plan properly, scale the crew to the job, and answer their own phone. Whoever you choose, the test is the same: do they understand what you are trying to achieve, or are they just quoting for footage?
The Red Flags, In Short
Vague answers about who does the work. No planning in the quote. Only montages to show. Prices that appear only after they have measured your budget. Ownership terms nobody mentions. Any one of these is worth a pause. Two or more, walk away.
Start With a Conversation, Not a Contract
The fastest way to judge a production partner is to talk to them about your goals and watch whether they respond with ideas or with a rate card. Our version of that conversation is a free 90-minute Discovery Session: you leave with a written content direction document, whether you choose us or not.
